Leaving Kunming

Will be moving out soon. People have been asking about my living conditions, so here's a little update.

This is the bedroom I'm using, just a single bed, quite small, but cozy.

A room that I don't use. 2 beds, a balcony where I dry my clothes.

The living room and computer table where the broadband ethernet cable is.

Some of the things in the house.

This is a gas powered water heater. The flame doesn't show up in the picture though.

Most important place, the toilet. A tub and hot water. What more could I ask for?

Not too bad huh? Hahaa.

First task

Back from the hospital in shi lin (stone forest). Had a chance to be in an operation, not me, but just there to observe and help translate for the American doctor working with the chinese.

Take a look at this.

Hotel suite? It's the VIP suite at the hospital, the first 2 pics were the living room. The next 2 are that of the patient's room.

Right, photos of accomadation must always have this room. There 2 of them, one linked to the living room and one to the patient's. No hot water though there was supposed to be.

View outside the window at night. A garden. But why the green lights? Looked kind of creepy.

A bit of JL (Jia Lin) syndrome here. The doctors brought us out for dinner. I only posted the picture of a dish I found unique. This is donkey meat. Tastes not too bad. There was pigeon as well, but to me, it tasted like duck.

First post

Second day over here in China.

How do I describe traffic here? Boh zheng hu (no government). Wouldn't dare to ride or drive here. Seems kind of scary. But because of that, the drivers seem much more alert. They'll serve to one side when there's a pedestrian crossing the road.

I've met some very strong people, esp this young girl of 19 who had acid scars on her face and eyes almost blinding her. She has had support from Singapore for an operation to help her regain her sight, and has to go to Sg sometime in June for the next part of her op. What amazes me is her optimism and confidence, even though her face is badly scarred, I can't see any self pity or her being unwilling to face others. I also met a 20+ guy with kidney failure awaiting transplant. For those of us who are healthy and flawless (relatively) features, it's a gift that we should be thankful for.

Technology here is of a high level. Guess the money has been spent on tech, rather than infrastructure. Still, many areas are undergoing renovation and rebuilding, resulting in a rather dusty environment. But for those roads already done up, the places are rather presentable. There're also plants everywhere. It's a rather nice city in my opinion. But in the words of a china student I met today, the place to see things are in the villages, and what will shock and inspire is not how badly this people are living, but their perseverance and strength, to not be overcome by hardship.

A lot of people commented that my chinese is good. Hahaa, makes me wonder. Is it cause the Singaporeans before me gave them a bad impression, or do they have a mistaken view of Singaporeans? Of couse, they could be just trying to be polite. Hahaa.
